Northwest Bangladesh is one of the richest archaeological regions in South Asia. From around 300 BC to the Mughal era, it was a centre of ancient civilisation where Buddhism, Hinduism, and Islam each left their mark. Bangladesh is a compact country, but it holds an extraordinary wealth of architectural treasures.

The journey begins with the region’s greatest monuments:

  • Mahasthangarh: the oldest known urban site in Bangladesh, once the capital of the ancient kingdom of Pundravardhana.
  • Somapura Mahavihara (Paharpur):
    • A UNESCO World Heritage Site, built in the 8th century by King Dharmapala of the Pala dynasty.
    • It was once the largest Buddhist monastery south of the Himalayas.
    • Around 60 stone sculptures of Hindu deities line its base, and its outer walls are covered in beautiful ornamental terracotta.
    • It is one of the most important pre-Islamic monuments in Bangladesh, and it shows the rich religious and cultural life of its time.
  • Kantajew Temple (Dinajpur): a spectacular 18th-century Hindu temple. Every inch of its walls is covered in intricate terracotta panels showing scenes from the Hindu epics.

Bengal is also famous for silk. Rajshahi’s fine mulberry silk has been treasured for centuries and remains a symbol of Bengali craftsmanship.

This is river country too. The holy Ganges (Padma) flows along the southwest of the region and the mighty Brahmaputra (Jamuna) along the east. Between them lies a flat, green, fertile landscape that is one of the country’s main farming heartlands.
